FAQ
Q: What is the difference between an immigrant visa and a nonimmigrant visa?
A: An immigrant visa allows you to live and work in
the United States for as long as you want. A nonimmigrant visa is usually
for temporary visitors to the United States who may be here to travel,
seek medical attention, conduct business, or study. Generally, people
in the United States with a nonimmigrant visa are not allowed to work
here, but there are many exceptions that allow United States employers
to hire foreign nationals as temporary workers.
Q: What should I
bring to my appointment?
A: Please bring
all of your immigration documents. If you are interested in a professional
or investor type visa, bring resume (curriculum vitae) as well.
Q: How Can I check the status of a case filed with
a US CIS Service Center?
A: Note that you may check the
status of cases filed only with a service center by clicking on the
following link. It’s also a good idea
to check the listed processing time which give a more accurate estimate
of how long it will take CIS to complete the case than the estimate on
the actual receipt or the online “Case Status” report.

the US DOL estimates that the backlog will be eliminated by September
30, 2007. You get news regarding backlog processing by clicking on the
